Oulun Energia takes care of the environment

Oulun Energia has assessed its impact on climate change and biodiversity, and has set targets to reduce these effects. Developing the circular economy is also important to us. Learn more about the actions we are taking to address environmental challenges.

Committed to midigating climate change

Our strategic objective is to achieve the net zero target by 2040, in line with the Science Based Targets (SBT) framework. The net zero target replaces our previous goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. In accordance with the net zero target, we will reduce our total emissions by at least 90% from the 2022 baseline by 2040. We will offset the residual emissions that cannot be reduced. Read more about our objective and actions to midigate climate change

Promoting biodiversity

We created the first biodiversity roadmap for the Oulun Energia Group in early 2024. The purpose of Oulun Energia Group’s biodiversity roadmap is to describe the objective and concrete actions with which we are responding to preventing the deteriorating state of biodiversity.

Developing of circular economy

One of Oulun Energia’s priorities is the development of circular economy solutions. Our subsidiary Syklo Oy aims to increase the amount of recyclable waste we use, and new ways are being developed to achieve this. Syklo´s vision is to grow and expand nationally and internationally, creating sustainable values for our customers and society. Read more about Syklo.

From the Merikoski fish pass gates, the fish migrate a 750-metre journey with a 64-step ladder 11 metres above sea level. The migration of the fish past the power plant continues upstream the Oulujoki river 40 km to the Montan voimalaitos hydro power plant and to branches of the Oulujoki river, to Muhosjoki and Sanginjoki.
